40 Riders .. 6 Days ... 1000 Kms !
The Budget Truck Rentals Tour de Freedom 1000 is an annual charity ride that raises money to support Teen Challenge WA. This year’s event will be held on Monday 19th October 2015 to Sunday 25th October 2015.
Up to 40 riders and support crew depart Esperance on the south coast of WA and snake their way through WA’s Great Southern and South West regions finishing in Perth. The Tour takes 6 days and covers 1,000km, with riders covering approximately 200km per day.
In 2015 the Tour is celebrating its seventh birthday. Participants will again have the opportunity to experience the remarkable countryside and hospitality that is on offer in the WA’s Great Southern and South West as well as completing one of the hardest charity rides in Australia.
The Tour was established in 2009 by bicycle enthusiast Kari Rummukainen in an effort to raise money for a cause he believed in – Teen Challenge WA. Kari created the concept of the ride and garnered support from sponsors and cyclists alike. Through the commitment of the riders and supporters, the Tour de Freedom 1000 has raised over $1.26 million for Teen Challenge since 2009. Unfortunately, Kari died of a heart attack during the 2011 Tour, but his legacy continues. Each year, one rider is selected as the Kari's Rider of the Tour, for his or her outstanding contribution to the Tour, through fundraising, community spirit and strength of character during the Tour. The award trophy is donated and presented by the Rummukainen family.
Teen Challenge is regarded as one of the most successful drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs in the world. Teen Challenge Grace Academy in Esperance is the largest youth residential rehabilitation and training program in WA, offering men and women aged 16 and over a teaching program leading to freedom from drug and alcohol dependence and other life control problems, including the restoration to families.
